The home of the world's oldest Classic race, the Rothmans Royals St. Leger, Doncaster stages top class Flat and National Hunt racing throughout the year. Highlight of the Spring is the 3-day Worthington Lincoln Meeting, which traditionally signals the start of the new Flat season on turf. The prestigious 4-day Rothmans Royals St. Leger meeting takes place in September and a Sunday fixture on 2 July promises to be a great family occasion. A regular bus service operates from St. Sepulchregate and Duke Street close to the Frenchgate Centre, near the rail station. Situated on the rolling Northumbrian Hills, 2 miles south-west of the town, Hexham racecourse is worth a visit for the breathtaking scenery alone. Jump racing has been staged on the present site for the best part of 200 years and many competitive contests take place on Yarridge Heights. Newcastle Racecourse is set in 850 acres of unspoilt parkland at High Gosforth Park, 4 miles from the city centre. The highlight of 2000 will undoubtedly be the 3-day Northumberland Plate Meeting, with the feature race - the most valuable 2 mile handicap in Europe on the Flat taking place on 1 July. Getting to the racecourse is easy; catch the Metro from Central Station to Regent Centre, South Gosforth or Four Lane Ends and join the Newcastle Racecourse FREE Hopper bus service which runs regularly from 2 hours before the first race and up to 1 hour after the last race. * Denotes evening meeting. |

Thirsk is a popular, picturesque racecourse nestling at the foot of the Hambleton Hills in North Yorkshire, an area steeped in racing folklore. The Classic Trial Stakes, now a 'Listed' race, is run in April and other feature races during the season include the Thirsk Hunt Cup and the Tote Hambleton Cup, while the Annual Lords Taverners' Day takes place on 5 August. The station at Thirsk is an easy 10 minute walk from the racecourse entrances. Turn left out of the Station, walk straight down the main A61 road and the racecourse is on your left. * Denotes evening meeting. |

Winner of 'Northern Racecourse of the Year' title in 1999, York is one of the world's truly great racecourses. Facilities for racegoers in the Tattersalls and County Stand enclosures are particularly good, blending the modern with York's traditional elegance. Highlights include the May Meeting which previews Epsom and Royal Ascot rolled into one. Big Saturdays include Timeform Charity Day (17 June), John Smith's Cup Day (15 July) and the Coral Sprint Trophy (7 October). The standard of racing is always high and Friday and midweek meetings are always well worth attending. York has good facilities for the disabled. The racecourse is 1 mile south of York Station from which a 'First Bus' raceday shuttle operates at least every 15 minutes. There is also a good taxi service. * Denotes evening meeting. |
